Whatsapp disappearing audio messages android rollout in 2023

In good news for people with people worried about their privacy, WhatsApp has rolled out view once audio messages on 8th December 2023. it means that now you can send audio messages that will disappear after the person you sent it to(the recipient) hears it.

WhatsApp announced this feature in their blog on the 7th of December,2023. You can find this announcement in the WhatsApp blog post here.


In their blog post, WhatsApp stated why would someone turn on disappearing messages on WhatsApp. It will be useful in case someone wants to read out their credit card details to their friends. It will also be useful when planning a surprise as well. These messages can only be listened to once and are clearly marked with a 'one-time' icon.

However, this feature can be used for other purposes like disclosing any sensitive information through audio messages, perhaps saying something special to your special someone that you don't want others to listen and many other uses which can be.


WhatsApp launched view once video and text messages back in 2021. This view once audio message feature is similar to that. You can now send audio messages disclosing sensitive information without worrying about it. 


WhatsApp disappearing messages are end-to-end encrypted by default. No one besides you and your recipient can view or listen to your audio messages which enhances your privacy. These messages can not be stored, shared or starred.


These disappearing audio messages are marked with the ‘one-time’ icon keeping in line with the consistency of WhatsApp’s view once video and text messages.


How do you send a disappearing voice note in WhatsApp?



To send these disappearing messages follow  the steps below:-

  1. Open an individual or group chat
  2. Tap and hold the record button
  3. Swipe up to lock the recording.
  4. You are now  in the view once audio message recording mode
  5. Record your message
  6. Tap the send button.

Note: 

  1. WhatsApp audio messages cannot be stored on the user's device or recorded.
  2. These messages have to be listened to within 14 days after they have been sent or they will disappear.
  3. The recipients need to have read receipts enabled to confirm if the message was opened.
  4. These audio messages can not be retrieved after the recipient listens to them. These audio messages will not be included in the backup as well.
  5. However, unopened disappearing audio messages in WhatsApp can be listened to, but after the recipients listen to them they will disappear.
  6. voice messages that haven't been opened during backup can be restored, but once they are opened, they can't be included in the backup.
  7. You can't take screenshots of these disappearing messages.

WhatsApp has also rolled out another feature where users can create secret codes with texts or emojis to secure their chats.
